Transportation Policy Justice

Here in the U.S. and in Pennsylvania, we're great believers in justice for all. But right now Pennsylvania and much of the country has a transportation policy that is more like injustice for all.

• Most American families spend more on driving than on health care, education or food
• Poorest families spend the most - often more than one-third of their income for transportation
• Car insurance, fuel, car payments, repairs, etc. drain income: according to triple A, the cost of car ownership averages well over $6,000 annually.
• Highway air and water pollution affects our health and degrades our environment
• Lack of adequate transit service makes jobs in suburbs inaccessible to many
• Lengthy commutes leave little time for family life
• Inadequate transit denies mobility to the aging, the young and people with disabilities
• Traffic accidents kill 41,000 Americans annually, and injure many more
