Al
Engel is Vice President and High Speed Rail Director for
AECOM Technology Corporation (“AECOM”). AECOM is a leading global provider of design,
engineering, program management, construction management, and operations and
delivers complete solutions for all types of transportation projects. Engel
recently concluded two years of service as a Financial Advisor with Morgan
Stanley Co., Incorporated.
From 1991 until 2006 he served as
President and Chief Executive Officer of SYSTRA Consulting (formerly LS Transit
Systems, Inc.), a New Jersey-based planning and engineering firm specializing
in rail transportation and public transit.
He has been active in the rail transportation industry for more than 35
years serving in engineering, marketing, and management capacities both with
manufacturers and engineering enterprises.
Following his graduation from Penn
State University
with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, he joined General
Electric in Erie, Pennsylvania where he progressed through
various management positions to Manager of Electrification Projects, the
business unit delivering electric motive power worldwide. While at GE he was program manager for the GE
E60CP fleet, Amtrak’s first high speed locomotive procurement program.
In 1978, Mr. Engel left GE to
accept a leadership position with Gibbs & Hill, Inc., a major New
York-based engineering firm (now part of URS Corporation). He was appointed Vice President and Managing
Director of the Transportation and Transmission Division in 1983, and later his
responsibilities were expanded to include management of the Architectural and
Urban Development Division, which included Environmental Engineering and
Sciences and also the marine engineering unit.
Major projects included the Pittsburgh Stage I light rail system, the
NJDOT EL and NY&LB electrification, the WMATA Metro communications and
control systems and the North River sewerage
treatment facility.
In August of 1985, Engel was
appointed the first President and CEO of LS TRANSIT SYSTEMS, INC. (LSTS), a
newly created consulting firm specializing in public transportation. Starting with a $2 million contract at NJ
Transit, Engel and his team created a consulting firm of national prominence,
today known as SYSTRA Consulting, Inc. During
his tenure, the firm acquired consulting roles on such notable projects as the
NJ Transit Tunnel Project, NYMTA LIRR East Side Access project, the Amtrak Acela Express infrastructure upgrade
project, and the California High Speed Rail Authority Implementation Plan.
From April 1989 to January 1990
Mr. Engel served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Atlantic Track and
Turnout Co., a steel product fabricator and distributor specializing rail and
track accessories. He transformed the
company from a two man proprietorship to an employee-stock ownership company
(ESOP) which enjoys a national reputation.
A licensed professional engineer,
Mr. Engel currently serves on the American Public Transportation Association
(APTA) Board of Directors and serves on various APTA Committees. He is Past Chairman of the IEEE Land
Transportation Division, has served on several working committees of the
American Public Transit Association, and been active in the Transportation Research
Board, National Association of Railroad Passengers, New Jersey, National
Society of Professional Engineers, NJ Regional Business Partnership
Transportation Committee, and is a Past Chairman of the High Speed Ground
Transportation Association. Mr. Engel has also held leadership roles in
organizing national and international conferences on public transit and high
speed passenger rail project delivery. He has won numerous awards for his leadership
in public transportation advocacy.
Mr. Engel has also held elective
office through his service as a Borough Councilman in Glen
Ridge, Essex County, NJ,
2000 - 2002. He is married to wife,
Nancy and they reside in Franconia. They have three adult daughters.
